Can I use an external USB camera with my iPhone?
External USB cameras are currently supported only on iPad. Apple limits USB video capture (UVC) to iPads with USB-C. This is an Apple platform limitation, not a CamX limitation.
My USB device is not recognized. What should I do?
CamX works with devices that support the USB Video Class (UVC) protocol. Some cameras, microscopes, and borescopes use proprietary protocols and won't be recognized by iPadOS. If other UVC apps also don't detect your device, it likely doesn't support UVC. If you're sure your device supports UVC, iPadOS can occasionally fail to attach it; restarting the iPad usually fixes the issue.
The image appears flipped or mirrored.
Some capture cards and video sources output a mirrored signal. Use the flip/mirror option in Device settings to correct the orientation.
I'm getting screen tearing or dropped frames.
For best quality, use 420v (raw). If your device lacks the bandwidth, switch to 420f (compressed) under Settings > Device > Format. Also try lowering the resolution or frame rate, and make sure you are using a USB 3.0 cable and hub.
My video recording failed to save.
Ensure your device has enough storage space before recording. For long sessions, try using a lower resolution to reduce file size. Check the App Cache section under More for any partial recordings.
What USB cable and hub should I use?
Use a USB 3.0 cable and a powered USB hub for best results. A powered hub keeps the iPad charged during capture. USB 3.0 is required for 1080p 60fps and higher resolutions.
Do you track any personal data?
CamX does not collect or track personal data. Core features work offline. Optional in-app purchases are processed by Apple.
Can I license CamX for OEM or white-label use?
Yes. CamX is available for OEM and white-label licensing, including custom branding (app name, icon, theme), tailored feature sets, and capture-card bundling. Reach out via our
subreddit with your use case and estimated volume.
Why are you charging for Pro membership?
I started CamX as a hobby project. Pro membership helps me sustain development while balancing other paid work. Pro features will focus on advanced tools for power users. Core functionality will remain free forever, and I'll keep adding new features over time.
